Biodiversity and Environmental Improvement
Fife is fortunate to have a wealth of fantastic habitats, from its stunning coastline of cliffs and sand dunes, to the blustery heathland of the Lomond Hills. These habitats support a huge amount of wildlife. In fact, over 10,000 different species of plants and animals have been found in the kingdom. This tapestry of habitats, and the plants and animals that they support, together make up biodiversity - the rich variety of life on earth.
Given our location between the Eden and Tay estuaries, there are several important projects and organisations active in the area addressing biodiversity and environmental improvement to which you could contribute.
The Fife Coast & Countryside Trust (Fife Coast & Countryside Trust) have a number of volunteer activities to improve the environment along the Fife Coast from the Tay to the Forth. Some are focussed around the Eden estuary at Guardbridge, and the St Andrews beaches. If you fancy getting out and active while helping the environment at the same time, check if any of the events suits you.
Fife Council also have a Fife Local Biodiversity Action plan with a variety of initiatives. It can be accessed from WildFife - Biodiversity in Fife - Beautiful Fife
If you’d prefer the other side of the Tay, then the Tayside Biodiversity Partnership (Tayside Biodiversity whats-on) also have a wide variety of events planned.
The Marine Conservation Society is the UK’s leading charity for the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife. Among other things, they help arrange beach clean ups. You can search for events near us on their website www.mcsuk.org/nearyou using your postcode.
